INTRODUCTION

Following on revision of the examinations in Gaelic (Native Speakers) on the Ordinary and Higher grades of the Scottish Certificate of Education and for the Certificate of Sixth Year Studies the Gaelic Panel of the Board has given consideration to the question of the adequacy of the Board's List of Linguistic and Literary Terms for Native Speakers first issued in 1968.

It is the view of the Panel that the present list, while initially adequate, has proved increasingly restricting as the use of Gaelic in examinations has expanded. The Panel has therefore decided that the list should be revised and expanded and the opportunity taken to provide a Gaelic-English version as well as an English-Gaelic version.

In drawing up the revised list the Panel has had in mind the need to allow for future expansion and development in the use of Gaelic and accordingly the list more than satisfies current examination needs. Knowledge of purely grammatical terms will not be specifically required in the Board's examinations but these terms may be useful for classroom preparation, to be used at the teacher's discretion, and are included in the list for convenience.

The revised list, which incorporates the existing Board list with minor alterations, will apply to the Board's Gaelic examinations in and after 1984.
